Nutrition is what we eat and how it affects our body. It is one of the most controversial topics these days and proponents of a particular diet often see only one way to look at a problem. There is no universal correct diet for everyone. There is strong evidence that some starvation mimic diets can improve specific neurologic diseases (epilepsy) and now emerging evidence that those same diets can likely have an effect among other neurologic or psychiatric diseases.

Exercise is probably the most important part of the plan for meaningful life extension. Strength correlates to global health outcomes very well. The ability to perform aerobic exercise is a key tool for risk stratification for cardiac risk before elective surgery. Can you hold your own weight in your arms and walk a block? Can you walk up 4 flights of stairs without stopping? If you can now, do you think that you will be able to 20 years from now?

Delaying retirement is one of the best methods for preventing cognitive impairment. Additionally, delaying retirement will allow you to save less money for retirement in your middle years and likely work less hours, opening more time for emotional wellbeing and exercise. The extra compound interest earning time at the end of the savings period will have the most profound effect on the total money available at retirement apart from very early in life savings.

This area often gets the least attention in medicine. It also often is neglected in the absence of profound disease. Many people will exercise their body routinely while ignoring preventative emotional wellbeing. There are many stressors in modern life and addressing stress prior to negative impact can be incredibly beneficial. Many people might think that talking to a therapist is unnecessary if there aren’t serious problems.
